Understanding text contrast and WCAG thresholds
Foreground and background contrast ratios are one part of readable user interfaces.
Normal text and large text
WCAG AA contrast thresholds are generally 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for qualifying large text, subject to applicable exceptions.
Check actual colors
Test rendered colors, including disabled styles, hover states and backgrounds behind semi-transparent elements.
More than numbers
Readable typography, spacing, focus indication, color independence and meaningful feedback also affect accessibility.
Review across devices
Test text under mobile display modes, zoom and varying lighting conditions.
